Gas leak detection and repair
If you smell gas, leave the building and call Puget Sound Energy’s emergency line first. Once the utility has made it safe, we find the leak, repair or replace the line, pressure-test the system and get your gas back on.
The warning signs
What to watch for
- A rotten-egg smellNatural gas is odourised so you can smell it. Faint and persistent counts.
- A hissing soundNear a line, a meter or an appliance connection.
- Dead vegetationA patch of dead grass or plants over a buried line.
- Bubbles in standing waterOver a buried line after rain.
- Headaches, dizziness, nauseaIndoors, clearing when you go outside.
- A higher gas billWith no change in use.
How we find and fix it
We isolate sections of the system and pressure-test them to locate the leak, then check joints and connectors directly. The fix is usually a corroded section replaced, a failed flex connector swapped, or a joint remade. The whole system is tested again before gas is restored, and the work is inspected.

Gas leak questions
Who do I call first if I smell gas?
Leave the building, do not switch anything on or off, and call Puget Sound Energy’s gas emergency line or 911. Call us for the repair once the utility has shut off and checked the supply.
Can a gas leak be inside an appliance?
Yes. A failed connector or valve at a range, dryer or water heater is a common source. We check appliance connections as part of the diagnosis.
